Marijuana addiction in the United States
The proportion of admissions for primary marijuana abuse increased from 12 percent in 1996 to 16 percent in 2004 through 2006. Nearly three-quarters (74 percent) of primary marijuana admissions were male. Over half (52 percent) of primary marijuana admissions were nonHispanic White, followed by 29 percent who were nonHispanic Black and 14 percent who were of Hispanic origin. For primary marijuana admissions, the average age at admission was 24 years.

Recent national survey results showed that marijuana was the most commonly used illicit drug (14.8 million past month users). Among persons aged 12 or older, the rate of past month marijuana use was the same in 2006 (6.0 percent) as in 2005.

Past month marijuana use among male youths aged 12 to 17 declined gradually from 9.1 percent in 2002 to 6.8 percent in 2006. Among female youths, the trend was less clear with the rates in 2006 (6.4 percent) and 2002 (7.2 percent) not being significantly different.
